NICK'S STORY

The reason why I founded the Lift the Mask Club was because, two years ago, The Quell Foundation provided the screening “Lift the Mask: Portraits of Life with Mental Illness” at Penn State. This documentary resonated with me, and I wanted to provide a club that collaborated with this amazing foundation in order to provide open, honest conversations as well as a club that people could call their home and feel comfortable being involved with.

During my college years specifically, I have faced many ups and downs emotionally and physically. Attending a large university, as well as being unfamiliar with many people, things, and situations, can oftentimes be scary.   struggled to find my true friends and lost many friends along the way due to various reasons. Fortunately enough, I had a few close friends who have stuck with me throughout college and helped me during tough times. I have anxiety, depression, and self-image issues. These three specific aspects are things that I face daily, and I tend to overwork myself and stay busy in order to reduce these negative thoughts.

Through time, I have learned to improve my mental health by eating healthier, exercising, and taking time out of my week to do things for myself, whether that be going to dinner with a friend, have a relaxing night in, or going to a fun event to take my mind off of the countless stresses that I face. This club is something I hold dear to my heart, and I encourage you to join us in lifting your mask and advocating for ending the stigma around mental health.
