JESS'S STORY

As someone who experienced the trauma of losing a parent at a young age, I have lived what I feel is a very different life from my peers. While being forced to grow up at such a young age pushed me to be independent and responsible, it also made me feel like I sometimes missed out on just being a kid. It also has made it difficult for me address my emotions and to take time for myself to feel and process different things I experience in life. I am lucky to live a a fortunate life with loving and caring mom, family, and friends, but I too, like many others, deal with anxiety, sadness, and stress.

I would consider myself to have a “Type A Personality.” Like many others, I can be stressed or anxious, feel a constant sense of urgency, sometimes work myself to the point of exhaustion, and sometimes am easily frustrated or evoked with anger. I try my best to be “perfect” and “successful” in all aspects of life, and that can take a toll on any person.

Navigating life with mental illness can be tough and isolating, and often comes along with blame and secrecy, making it hard to reach out to for support and help. While I have been fortunate to have the support and resources to deal with my emotions, I know that many others do not experience the same.  I am proud and excited to be part of a club that aims to end the stigma against mental illness and look forward to the impact this club can make on campus.
